Ontario Modernizing Immigration Program to Fill In-Demand Jobs

Ontario has announced a major redesign of the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) to better address labour shortages and improve program efficiency. Bill C-12 Receives Royal Assent

Canada's Strengthening Canada's Immigration System and Borders Act (Bill C-12) became law on March 26, 2026, introducing significant changes to Canada's immigration and asylum system. One of the most notable changes is the introduction of a new one-year asylum eligibility rule: individuals who first entered Canada after June 24, 2020 and wait more than one year to make an asylum claim will no longer have their claim referred to the Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB), even if they subsequently leave and re-enter Canada. A second rule makes asylum claims ineligible if they are made more than 14 days after an irregular entry from the United States. These provisions apply to refugee claims made on or after June 3, 2025. The legislation also modernizes asylum processing, expands information sharing between government agencies, and strengthens the government's authority to manage immigration documents and applications during public interest situations

Canada Tightens Immigration Targets for 2026

Canada is restructuring its immigration system to support sustainable population growth and ease pressure on housing and public services. Under the 2026–2028 Immigration Levels Plan, permanent resident admissions are set at 380,000 annually, while the target for new temporary residents falls to 385,000 in 2026. The government also aims to reduce temporary residents to less than 5% of Canada’s population by the end of 2027, while prioritizing economic immigration, skilled workers and applicants already established in Canada.
